Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Course
This course is intended to provide the knowledge and skills citizen volunteers need to effectively serve their community; efforts to prepare for local emergencies and respond to them are the focus. Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) are organized, trained, and equipped to educate the public regarding emergency preparedness and perform many of the emergency functions needed in the aftermath of a disaster. CERTs coordinate their efforts with, and are intended to supplement the efforts of, a community’s professional emergency response staff.
The CERT course consists of eight modules, which address:
• Disaster preparedness
• Fire suppression
• Disaster medical operations (2 modules)
• Light search and rescue
• Team organization and disaster psychology
• Terrorism and CERT
• Course review and disaster simulation
How this course is offered:
Basic CERT Training classes are offered by local CERTs as well as by local organizations that are trying to establish teams. CERTs, and organizations trying to establish them, normally disseminate information on the availability of CERT Training to local volunteer groups and through the local media. If you are interested in participating in the CERT program, check the federal CERT web site for a list of CERT programs in your area and call the point of contact listed to obtain information on your local CERT organization and training schedule.
Prerequisites & Other Information:
No previous experience in emergency service is required, but participants should have an interest in such service and a willingness to serve once trained. As CERT responsibilities include disaster preparedness, fire suppression, disaster medical aid, and light search and rescue, individuals with training and skills in these areas may be particularly useful as CERT members.
No tuition is charged.
TDEM does not provide training materials. Training materials can be downloaded from the following FEMA site: http://www.fema.gov/community-emergency-response-teams/training-materials
