HazMat Refresher Training
This course includes both classroom and field activities designed to provide the annual regulatory required refresher training per 29 CFR 1910.120 to hazmat personnel (fulfills OSHA annual refresher training requirement). This course includes regulatory overview, practical exercises, hands-on skills to ensure that the participants have refreshed their original skill set.
*Rural County Host: If you are hosting a class in a rural county (population 150,000 or less) you may not be required to meet the “minimum number of students” for this class. Rural County Residents may be eligible for travel, lodging and/or per diem reimbursement to attend HMEP funded classes. A requester will need the support of your supervisor to receive funding. Instructional Staff: One (1) Instructor / One (1) Technician
Who Should Attend: Those employees who are trained in accordance with 19 CFR 1910.120 (q)(6) shall receive annual refresher training of sufficient content and duration to maintain their competencies, or shall demonstrate competency in those areas at least yearly. Personnel trained to the NFPA 472 Operations, Technician, or Incident Command level.
Note: To receive full benefits from these courses, it is recommended that it be taught at an approved fire training facility. All HMEP Hazardous Material Courses offered through TDEM are compliant with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120, EPA 40 CFR Part 311, NFPA Standard 472 and qualify for TCOLE credit.
”Due to the nature of Hazardous Material training, you may be required to perform some physically strenuous activities for this class which may include wearing PPE. Therefore, we recommend all students have a current physical examination prior to class start date.”
- Course Content: This course is designed to meet or exceed 29 CFR 1910.120 (q)(8)(i) annual refresher training requirements. This course will involve both classroom and field activities. The classroom will address regulatory overview and practical exercises. The outdoor portion of the class will address hands-on skills to ensure that the participants have refreshed their original skill sets.
How this course is offered:
This class is offered through TDEM HazMat Preparedness Group as an onsite delivery at a location designated by the requesting jurisdiction. These classes are an open enrollment with the approval of the class host and TDEM. If you are a County Judge; Emergency Management Coordinator; Fire or Police Chief; Public Works Trainer, Training Coordinator or Officer then you may request this course.
Prerequisites & Other Information:
Prior Certification/Training in Hazmat at the Operations/Technician level. Certificates verifying prerequisites must be uploaded to transcript in order to complete registration.
Students must be Public Sector Employees/Volunteers: Students must be employed or used by a political subdivision (county, municipality, city, town, township, local public authority, school district, special districts, interstate district, council of governments (whether or not incorporated as a nonprofit corporation under State law), any other regional or interstate government entity, or any agency or instrumentality of a local government. Private sector, federal, non-profit/not for profit employees may not eligible for these classes unless they also serve in a public sector/volunteer position. Volunteers must apply through their public sector departments. Texas residents only.
If you are Denied Registration:
The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) has denied your request to attend the above titled class because we cannot view your class prerequisites in your www.preparingtexas.org (PTO) account. Please upload your Basic, Intermediate, or Advance Fire certificate to your account for viewing by this office, in order to approve your request. If you are not a firefighter we will need to see your HazMat Awareness and HazMat Operations, or your H204 HazMat Awareness and Operations, or your H301 HazMat 40 Hr. Technician certificates. In the event you are using a Hazwopper certificate, it should state on the certificate the initial “e”, “i” and “q” on it.

Directions on how to upload your certificate is below. Be mindful everyday you delay in uploading your certificate, other students are requesting attendance to and being approved for the class.
How to Upload certificates into www.preparingtexas.org website:
Before you begin you should scan and save your class certificate on your computer, then write down the title of your certificate, whom the issuing agency is, and the date on your certificate.
• Log into Preparingtexas.org and in the top right hand corner you will see "My Account" click on it.
• Stroll down under “My Transcript” then click on "Add Additional Certificates to Your Transcript." Fill out the required information. All information should reflect what is printed on your certificate.
• Click "Browse" highlight and Open your certificate where located on your computer and then click the “Upload” button.
Filling out the Certificate boxes:
In Course Name box: Put the name on the certificate in the box.
In Course Matched box: Don’t put anything in this box.
In Start Date: Put the dates on your certificate, if it only has one date on certificate put same date in both boxes.
First Provider Name: Click on drop down arrow and find Texas Commission on Fire Protection or TEEX (where the certificate came from).
Second Provider Name: The above box should automatic populate this window if not just put in name of agency giving certificate.
In Certificate box: Click Browse and locate your certificate document and highlight and double click to make sure certificate uploads to the Browser Box and click Upload.
Certificate Explanation: You don’t have to fill this box out.
When the certificate is uploaded, you will be taken to a page with the message: "You have successfully submitted training certificate.” Once your certificate is verified, it will then show up in your transcript. Once we verify certificate you will be able to view it in your account profile.
