PER-318 - Preventive Radiological/Nuclear Detection Team Operations Course

Course Description:
The Preventive Radiological/Nuclear Detection (PRND) Team Operations
Course provides Primary and Secondary Screeners the skill sets to maximize their PRND equipment capabilities to efficiently and effectively perform the essential tasks to protect and secure critical infrastructure, large venues, and special events as a National Incident Management System (NIMS) typed team.

The four-day course includes multiple lectures, drills, and a final exercise
based on specific competencies, behaviors, and tasks in accordance with
typing for NIMS personnel, equipment, and teams.

Sealed radioactive sources are used during drills and practical exercises. These sources are intended to simulate types of radioactive material that may be encountered in the public domain.

Course Objectives:
• Identify the Preventive Radiological/Nuclear Detection (PRND) mission and the role of typed detection teams.
• Participants will demonstrate their ability to operate PRND Team
detection equipment.
• Team Operators will identify critical tasks of Preventive Radiological/Nuclear Detection (PRND) Team operations.
• Team Operators will demonstrate the critical tasks involved in
chokepoint operations for PRND Team Operations.
• Team Operators will demonstrate the critical tasks involved in area
detection operations for PRND Team operations.
• Team Operators will demonstrate the critical tasks involved in facility
detection operations for PRND Team operations.

Target Audience/Discipline:
Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Service, Hazardous Materials, Law Enforcement, State, Local, Territorial,
and Tribal (SLTT) Primary and Secondary Screeners who perform
PRND tasks included in the National Preparedness Goal mission areas of
Prevention and Protection, and SLTT agencies who wish to develop NIMS
typed PRND team.

It is the responsibility of the jurisdiction to select course participants.

Participant site

Certificates are issued to attendees upon successful completion of the
course. Additionally, CTOS-Center for Radiological/Nuclear Training
is authorized by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to offer
3.20 continuing education units (CEUs) for this course. A letter
verifying course completion and CEUs earned will be provided upon request by contacting CTOS at

• NIMS Type 1 PRND Screener-Secondary

Radioactive Sources
This course uses actual radioactive materials. It is designed and
monitored so participants receive only minor radiation doses (lower
than a chest X-ray or typical roundtrip airline flight across the U.S.).
